Which salt is right for you?

Can you imagine eating food without any salt? Food, especially our Indian cuisine, is practically tasteless without it. However, did you know that salt does more than add taste to food?

Salt helps in various ways like:

  • Assisting the body to retain water and maintain body pressure levels
  • Acting as a nerve stimulant for proper muscle functioning
  • Activating enzymes that aid in the appropriate digestion of food

Despite its many advantages, too much salt is not healthy. Too much of it can lead to other unnecessary health complications. 

The types of salt we have

We at Healthy Buddha take pride in selling three types of salts. They are:

1. Black salt

The first is black salt, which many of you may also know as Kala namak in Hindi. If you wonder what it is, well, it’s a pinkish-gray salt that does not contain any chemicals. 

It, on the contrary, is a type of Indian volcanic stone salt, which is why it contains healthy iron and other minerals. 

Black salt is popularly used as a cooling spice, and also helps with digestion. It helps relieve both heartburn and intestinal gas. This is why it is an essential ingredient in the famous chat masala you add to your fruits and cooking. 

2. Himalayan rock salt

The second type of salt is natural, unrefined, and unprocessed raw salt. It’s an iodized table rock salt that’s hand-mined and contains about 84 minerals, including traces of natural iodine. 

The salt contains lots of minerals but doesn’t have any chemicals and additives. It is, in fact, also used as a medicinal salt because of the many health benefits it offers the human body. 

It helps in the development of children’s bones, is suitable for BP patients and to control blood sugar levels and also helps the digestive system. This is healthy for pregnant women.  

3.Sea salt

The third type of salt we have in Healthy Buddha is sea salt. It’s a natural salt extracted from the shores of Gokarna, in northern Karnataka. 

It’s produced through a process of evaporating ocean water without any artificial processing. That’s the reason why the salt contains so many vital body nutrients. 

Sea and table salt are different in their taste, texture, and processing. Sea salt is, however, useful in cooking because it quickly dissolves and disperses its flavour. So you can safely use it in all your dishes. 

Why we don’t sell table salt at Healthy Buddha

You may wonder why we do not sell table salt. As you know, your health is always our top priority, which is why we sell only healthy products.

We do not sell table salt because all its minerals are eliminated during its cumbersome manufacturing process. Besides, table salt usually contains an additive used to prevent its clumping. 

Now that you know about the 3 different salts we sell, it’s up to you to decide which to buy. However, as mentioned above, no matter which salt you choose to use, always restrict and use it moderately.

What are the differences between coconut oil and virgin coconut oil? Which is better?

This post is specifically for all of you who have always wondered what the difference is between the cold pressed and virgin coconut oils we sell. Read on to find out the differences between the two, so that you know which to buy for your family.

Differences between cold-pressed and virgin coconut oils

1.Extraction method

This is where the main difference lies between cold-pressed and virgin coconut oil, its extraction method.

Cold pressed coconut oil is extracted from copra or dried coconut kernel, usually after drying coconuts in the sun. Like the name suggests, the coconuts are pressed to extract the oil and is ready for use and consumption.

However virgin coconut oil is extracted from the fresh coconut milk and left to settle down. The fresh coconut is first finely grated and then passed through a machine to extract the coconut milk. 

The milk is kept aside for a day to separate after which it forms three individual layers.

They are the upper curd layer, middle oil layer, and bottom-most water layer. The extracted oil is then removed and left to settle. It lets the moisture in the mixture evaporate to give pure coconut oil.

2.Appearance and composition 

Both cold-pressed and virgin coconut oils look similar and have the same energy content. A tablespoon of any coconut oil contains 117 calories and 13.6g of fat where 11.8grams are saturated fats. 

Most of the coconut oil fats are medium-chain triglycerides your body uses as energy, but don’t increase the risks of cardiovascular disease. While both oils contain medium-chain triglycerides, the hydrogenated cold-pressed oils may contain Trans fat.

3. Health benefits

Virgin coconut oil is always healthier than cold pressed coconut oil.  It’s because, like in any other food processing methods, the heat used to dry copra can reduce the antioxidant content in cold pressed coconut oils.

It means virgin coconut oil contains more antioxidants and essential vitamins than cold-pressed oil.

4. Taste and aroma

Virgin coconut oil has a delicious, tropical coconut aroma and flavour while cold pressed coconut oil has a neutral scent and flavour.

5. Cost

Virgin coconut oil is a more expensive option, which isn’t surprising. You need more coconuts to get 1 lt. of the oil when compared to cold pressed coconut oil.
